WHAT IS A LACTATION CONSULTANT?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. She is knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced in this field and her primary focus is to provide education, assistance and support to breastfeeding women.
Mothers who experience problems in the first few days or weeks of breastfeeding need accurate information and support to help them continue breastfeeding.
An IBCLC can provide this support and information and is able to help with a large number of breastfeeding circumstances. Learn more

WHEN IS A LACTATION VISIT NEEDED?
We recommend lactation visits whenever a mother is having pain or difficulties with the breastfeeding.
If the baby is not latching, do not force the baby to take your breast; struggling at the breast may reinforce the baby's refusal to breastfeed. Keep your baby skin-to-skin between your breasts as much as possible. If baby doesn't begin to latch on, pump your breast every three hours, feed the pumped milk to the baby and get help as soon as possible.
Ever wondered what the initials IBCLC stand for? Here's a video from the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners which explains it all.
